Criteria B Paragraph

I chose to be a therapist. This is my proposed profession because I want to help people. I know I will not be able to give away millions of dollars so I thought of something more mental which would help just as much. When I was in middle school, I was going through a lot of hard time at the time, and due to the absence of a school counselor at our school, I had to deal with it myself, which was not the best choice, but it was the only choice. Because I was just a kid, I did not know how to deal with my emotions, and I was constantly getting overruled by them. My mood was changing constantly and no one was able to keep up with it and I always wonder how different things would've turned out if I had a therapist. Some people might misunderstnad therapy and interpret it as just a way of complaining about life and some peoples' responses are "Just get over it," but the thing is, it's not that easy to overcome and obstacle if you're just in 6th or 7th grade. You're just a kid and you need someone to tell you how to deal with the emotions and guide into the right direction. So I want to help the same kds as me.

Evaluation
Overall this unit, was very challenging and interesting, but not in a good way. I have always been the type of person who would just let the life take me to wherever it was going next and decided that life was not worth planning ahead. It is much more interesting if I were to be surprised by every little thing. I have never thought about what I wanted to be when I grew up and it wasn’t in my interest to plan it either. I know some people who are already embracing their future right now by deciding on many different subjects and trying out different community service hours. I usually do not have an answer when someone asks my about my future so this project forced me to get off my butt and do some research and give my future some decent thought. I am good at math but I did not want to be stuck with it for the rest of my life, so I did not know where to start. So I thought, just for this project, I’ll be a therapist. I chose my profession out of panic (for I was running out of time). My career plan didn’t really look like a major decision of my life. There was nothing wrong with it, but the information I provided were very basic. My performance for Investigation was very good, besides the career choosing part. I did all the required researches and I tried as hard as I could to find something which interested me but there weren’t enough jobs in the world. My video consisted of a lot of places and it reflected my different areas of expertise such as how I was on the soccer team, how my painting was in the book, how I am trying to get some singers from our school to sing “We are the world” for our school community.
Since now, I know what it feels like to choose a goal and this unit somehow gives me a warning how difficult life would be out side of school. Once I’m finished with school, it’s over and I’m on my own. It scares me in a way. The career plan gives us a head start of how it would be when we get old. The video is a chance for us to make the best video we can when we are actually applying for college. This video has given me a lot of new ideas and how differently I would do them for next time.

Criterion E

I was very excited about the project because it was something we had never done before. Writing the script was both challenging and fun. I had to struggle to keep it ancient whilst doing in a modern time. I was even more excited that when I came back from ACAMIS, I realized that my script had been chosen to be performed. However, not everyone else liked the unit so we voted it off. I think I was the only enthusiastic one about the whole unit because, of course, my script was chosen. I did not volunteer to do any work such as acting, directing, make up, editing, because my class seems to have it under control. I think that if we have continued on the unit the way it was planned, it might have been a very silly movie and everyone’s not-seriousness was getting us nowhere. I think that another reason why no one liked the unit was because Mrs. Wilson herself did not like it either. When the teacher doesn’t like what she’s teaching, I think it just kills it for the rest of the class so it is good that she cancelled the unit and decided to start fresh.

Criterion B

Criterion B
The couches that the contestants will sit on can be got from the library.
There are no other materials.
Because we chose our topic of the script from the choices on the board, there wasn’t much to choose from. However, I tried to make it work with what I had and I think my script was modern and ancient at the same time.

Career Planning Investigation

My Interest
1. Sleeping
2. Playing football
3. Reading
4. Watching movies
5. Solving math problems
6. Net surfing
7. Discussing books with my class
8. Ballet
9. Listening to music
Why I like these
1. When I was younger, I used to dread going to sleep, but now that I am older and have more homework I am not getting enough sleep and I am tired all the time.
2. I started playing football when I was in 7th grade and I realized that it was the only sport I wasn’t horrible at, but I’m not that great at it either. However, the most important thing is that I enjoy playing it
3. On Friday nights I do not like to go out. I prefer staying in and reading a good book. I am a very independent person so I am not a big fan of crowds or places with massive amounts of people.
4. Next to reading, I love watching movies. Any kind of movies.
5. Since I was in kindergarten, I was always good at math and liked it as well. My mom encouraged me to take math lessons because she saw my ability to do so well in it. I liked being better than everyone else at something.
6. Everybody loves net surfing and doing nothing useful
7. Since I went into 9th grade, I started to enjoy my English classes. I loved sitting in my class with my peers and just discussing what we’ve read.
8. I started to take ballet lessons since I was last year and realized that I loved it when I stopped doing it.
9. Everyone loves listening to music

At school, I like sitting in English class and discuss books. Of course I like lunch and recess. But the lesson I look forward to the most is math class. My ‘passion’ for math is still somewhere there inside my head and that just keeps me going. P.E is the only physical lesson we get in school and I try to make the best of it. It is a chance for us to shake away all the thoughts and writing and reading.
After school in my leisure time, I stay at home and read a book and watch a movie. or of course just listening to music is good too.

Evaluation for Shiny Shakespeare

Due to the major delay and problems while filming the play, Mrs. Wilson and the whole ninth grade class has voted off the unit. However, we can't just end like that, we have to evaluate and identify what the problem was.
In the beginning, the unit seems fun to the both students and teachers; meaning Mr Thompson and Mrs Wilson. the students were all excited about the costumes and casting and who's script was going to be chosen. However, in the mid process of the unit, half the class went away to ACAMIS which is the answer to the confusions after everyone had returned from China and Germany, and whatever. The success of this unit was how eager everyone was to start the unit. And after a few confusions, the whole class decided that we were wasting too much time preparing and that we should just get on with it. We tried to get as much as videoing done last class, but the whole 80 minutes was not enough. Mrs. Wilson said that since we could not afford to lose any time by memorizing lines, everyone could look at their script while performing and at the end we could just cut the scenes out. But seeing how much time we've already wasted, that was not a big deal. Not only were we wasting our time, we were wasting the Language B people's time as well. Since they had not even read the play Much Ado about Nothing and they did not write their own scripts, they were kind of bored and were just sitting around for the last couple of lessons.
I do not think that the unit was planned out thoroughly and that caused us to FAIL. Since this was the first time doing this unit, some obstacles were expected. However, Mrs Wilson herself admitted how much she hated this unit and she just did not want to waste any more time doing it when she could clearly see that it was getting us nowhere. For further improvements, (if they plan on doing this unit again), the teacher should make a plan for every lesson of what the class needs to do so everyone will have to meet a deadline for the memorization of their lines, and to bring in their costumes and such.

The Iris Show
(Audience on the left of the stage are facing the interviewer and behind the interviewer are 3 chairs. Benedick, Hero, Beatrice, and Claudio are sitting, facing the interviewer. Don Pedro, Ursula, Margaret, and Borachio are sitting in the front row of the audience)

Iris: Hello there. Welcome to The Iris Show. Ladies and gentleman we got special treat for you. Our today’s guests are Signor Benedick, Count Claudio, Lady Hero, and Lady Beatrice. The rule is you have to answer my question truthfully. I will only question you once. Signor Benedick? (motions him to sit next to her) So, Signor Benedick, do inform us on how thy and Lady Beatrice got back together.

Benedick: For Beatrice is the fairest lady I have ever rested my eyes upon, I love her with all my heart. And after Don Pedro and Claudio disclosed her secret about her sensational feelings towards me, I began picking up on her insinuations.

(Beatrice gasps and throws a shocking glare at Don Pedro.
Don Pedro and Claudio fight hard to contain their laughter.)
(Benedick has a confused look on his face.)

I believe the term she used was she loves me with “an enraged affection”.
(Don Pedro and Claudio bust out laughing and
Beatrice springs from her chair)

Beatrice to Don Pedro: I said no such thing. I only declared my love to Benedick for no soul would ever love such lumpish canker-blossom.

Benedick (shocked): Well, I only declared my love to you for no one would ever even dream of loving such a nagging, self-righteous shrew! My love to you is no less nor more than pity.

Iris: Peace, peace. Please, Signor, sit. Lady Beatrice, (motioning her to sit). Now, thank you Signor Benedick, you may resign to your seat now.

(Angrily stomps back to his seat and ignores Beatrice’s gaze)
Our next participant is Claudio. Please, Count Claudio, come hither!
(Audience claps. Claudio sluggishly drags his feet to
the chair next to Iris, looking grumpy.)

So rumor has it that Lady Hero has been yet unfaithful to you. Please, share what proof you have for this accusation.

Claudio: I saw stranger man wooing Hero by the moonlight at her window after the party.
(Hero gasps)
Iris: Hero? You look as if you might have something to say. If so, please, speak.
Hero: I was not in my room tha-
(Margaret springs from her chair)
Margaret: It was I, lady! (with wide eyes)
(The whole audience gasps)

Borachio: Sit down!! (hisses at her whilst pulling her arm down)
Hero (shocked): I beg your pardon?!
Margaret: It was I at your window that night. With, with, Borachio! (points down at Borachio)
(Crowd gasps again, louder)
(Hero swoons)

Borachio: Nonsense!
Margaret: You droning, idle-headed scut! At least have the decency to come forward with it.
Boachio: (glares at Ursula with mad eyes) Yes, it was I who wooed Margaret that night. It was I who accepted my master’s orders and dressed Margaret in Lady Hero’s garments. But it was not I who wanted Lady Hero slandered. It was your bastard brother (points at Don Pedro).

(Crowd starts murmuring)
(Claudio throws himself at Borachio and swears to kill him)

Iris: Gentlemen, please! Stop this at once!
(Benedick and Don Pedro separate them)
I think that’s enough of an answer Count Claudio. You may resign to your seat.
(Claudio sits back down, still glaring at Borachio)
And may I make it clear that this kind of behavior is completely inappropriate and dim-witted? Thank you. Next on our stage I am glad to welcome Lady Beatrice. Please, come hither. Well, Beatrice, as Benedick has said, do you really love Benedick?
Beatrice: I feel nothing but the deepest pity towards him. He says he loves none women, but there’s more to it. Not only he loves none, but none love him. But of course, how? He is an incompetent, selfish haggard and he would’ve died wifeless if it wasn’t for me! Not even that, but I do recall overhearing Hero and Ursula talking about his feelings for me.

(Ursula giggles)
(Benedick’s eyes widen)

But of course, he never came forward with it. He was too much of a coward.
(Benedick rises)
Benedick: Beatrice, you’ve let this go too far! I will not put up with your rubbish anymore!

Beatrice: Thou art a flesh-monger, a fool and a coward. The truth threatens you does it not?
It is true that you were too less of a man to declare your feelings for me, to me, were you not?

Benedick: Lady Lacklove, it is not because I was too less of a man, it is because there was nothing to declare. I never owned any true feelings towards you, never.

Beatrice: Wasn’t it just a while ago you said I was the fairest of them all?
Benedick: I had to-
Beatrice: And how will you defend yourself on this one Benedick? Every single person in here heard you confess your affection towards me. (Crowd cheers) Farewell Signor Benedick. (storms out)
Iris: Are you going to follow her?
Benedick: I follow no lady who disgraces me in public.
Iris: (raises one eyebrow)
Benedick: Farewell, Iris. (hurries after Beatrice) Lady Lacklo- Beatrice!
(Benedick exits, leaving Claudio alone on stage. He sits awkwardly for a moment and slowly gets up and follows Benedick)
(Iris is completely alone on the stage)

Iris: That was our show for tonight ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for staying with us, you were a delight. We’ll see you next time for more scandal. Till then, Iris.

(All exit)

Process

Due to the confusion between Mr, Thompson and Mrs. Wilson, she has divided up the whole class according to their script type. for example, there are groups such as the talk show, gossip crew, and the commercial type. And within our groups, the whole class is stil debating whether we should perform and work on one person's script or manage a way to combine all of them. Uudee refuses to compromise his script with anyone else's, and Reeza's and mine include a similar taste. Mrs. Wilson said that we could all do our individual show, but it would be best if we all were working one topic. The whole class is waiting Mr. Thompson to finish grading our scripts, so we could take a look at whose script has earned the best mark. we might have to vote off some scripts, but I think we'll manage a way to do this. the project altogether is very confusing because the two teachers are talking about two completely different things. For example: Thompson says that he will choose one or two scripts for use to perform, whilst Mrs. Wilson wants to give us a chance to perform everyone's script.
Last class, everyone got together with their group and TRIED to outline and plan their setting. However, because the whole class was more confused than today back then, not everyone got to do as much as they could have if they understood the whole project clearly.
So, overall, the whole class seems to be confused in some way and that is what is causing us to slow down. We haven't even recieved our grades for the scripts yet!

Modern Shakespeare Criteria A: Investigation

Modern Shakespeare
• Approaches to Learning
• Communicators
Research
• Video (editing)
• TV shows (news)
• Talk shows
• Background
• Sparknotes
• Movie
Our new unit it Design Technology is relevant to Shakespeare in a way. Mrs. Wilson was going to name our unit Bringing Shakespeare to the 21st Century, but it seemed so long so we decided to rename it. The class got torn between the choices of Shining Shakespeare Show and Modern Shakespeare. The first choice was much better of course  , but we ended up with the name Modern Shakespeare because of some people’s lack in humor.
So what this project is about is just as what the name sounds like. During English class, we are reading a play by Shakespeare called Much Ado about Nothing, and for our summative assessment for English class, we are to write a script. The script would be used for the scandal show that is on in today times. And in technology class, we are producing the film version of the script.
For this unit, Approaches to Learning is the fit area of interaction because we are learning a new unit aspect of technology. In the past we have never produced a movie besides a slideshow with pictures and slides with words on it. For this unit, I am very looking forward to learning how to with movie-like features without echoing in the backgrounds, for example.
It is important to learn about Shakespeare not only because he has written many plays in his time, but because he was the first person to write the way he did and he has inspired many other writers. Not only that but it is inspiring and amazing how documents written four hundred years ago are still alive and highly significant today. Shakespeare’s influence is still seen clearly in many ways. He is also credited with being one of the first writers to use any modern style in his writings. In conclusion, it wouldn’t hurt to say that Shakespeare was the master of the artistry of the English language.
From this unit I expect to learn many different aspects about filming with a camera and different stage directions. I suspect that it is very difficult to produce a film. The one thing I am looking very forward to is making Shakespearean plays sound modern and easy for youngsters to understand.
Personally, I have somewhat experience with Shakespeare, meaning that I know what some of his plays refer to. However, I cannot say I know a lot because I have only read three plays by him; The Merchant of Venice, Much Ado About Nothing, and Midsummer Night’s Dream. I believe that I can say that I have more experience with comedies written by him, because Midsummer Night’s Dream and Much Ado about Nothing are both comedies. What makes the content of the play funny is the way he uses his characters to insult one another.
We have a staff crew who, I guess might be very helpful. Mr. Laws is a photographer, who knows about lighting and shading better than any of us. Ms. Leong, the new drama teacher, can be helpful to us with stage directions.
Besides the backstage, we need to survey who wants to be in front of the camera and who behind it. Some people like to act others
What I need to know before researching
• Where is a good place for filming in the school?
• What are the best scenes to include?
• What editing programs are good?
• What kind of programs are we going to use that we have on the school programs
• What is a flip?
• What kind of camera should we use?
• What kind of makeup is good?
• How do we edit a movie?
• How do we get everyone to participate?
• What are the roles of a cameraman?

Design Specification
• Must be funny
• Easy to understand
• Easy to hear (no echo)
• Everything that is supposed to be seen should be seen. (lighting)
• No noise in the background
• No awkward silences
Detailed Test
1. Are the actors/actresses snickering or laughing in the background or while acting?
2. Do the actors know their lines?
3. Are there any awkward silences?
4. What were the problems that I experienced?
5. Was it a success?

Detailed Test (answered)

Detailed Test
1. Did I answer the unit question? How or why not?
Yes, I did in a way. It wasn’t the best way I could’ve because I lost track of my organization and my whole poster was unplanned-for-answering-the-unit-quesiton.
2. Was my poster/essay easy to understand and provided new information?
Yes. It provided the viewers with a lot of new information and it was in a chronological order from the earliest time.
3. Was my oral presentation decent?
N/A
4. Did I cover the basic background of gum? (who invented it, when it was invented, etc)
Yes. If not, I spent too much babbling about the history and not answering the unit question well.
5. Did I work hard on it as I should have?
Yes. I spent a great amount of time and care into my poster, except it just didn’t turn out the way I expected.
6. Did I follow my plan?
I did in a way, and I finished my task on time and sometimes a little early which led me to finish earlier than I planned.

Evaluation

Evaluation
For my unit project, I decided to create a poster explaining the early times of gum and how it has evolved over the years including by whom it was invented by and how. The aim of this project was to answer the unit question which was “How do inventors come up with ideas and create their invention?” in any way we wanted, i.e: poster, essay, PPP, movie, video, etc. Of course we had to research for some background information and insert the ideas onto the poster, and that is the stage of my project I had a slight difficulty with, which I will mention later. The successful part about my poster is that the fact that the unit question was answered and background information was completed. My final product was colorful and creative and contained the information that was to be contained.
For this summative assessment, as a class, we decided to skip Part B (Design) of the Design Cycle, because everyone was completing different tasks and on different stages. For Part A (Investigation) I researched the inventor of Gum, since that is my topic. My overall research was decent, and when I thought that I had what I needed, then that was when I moved on to the next step; Part C (Plan).
The Planning of my poster was somewhat easy and complex at the same time. The easy part was the fact no research needed to be done. The hard part was every little timing needed to be thought precisely. In my previous project, I completed my tasks according to my plan exactly, and because my previous plan was such a success, I wanted my current plant paper to be just as decent. Because I lost track of time for the investigation part, I had to crush my Plan into the last 15 minutes of class. Mrs. Wilson told us that each and every one of our plan needed to be handed in by the end of class and I started panicking. I couldn’t think straight and I started to cram everything into the next classes we had. However, when I looked at my Plan posted on my blog when I got home, it actually made sense to me, but still, I decided to do some poster planning on the weekends and that way I would be sure that I would get everything done. I finished my Poster earlier than I planned to and that was the “upside” of my whole project.
Creating Poster
Whilst creating my poster, I realized that I completely put off the unit question and how to answer it. And by the time I realized this, I was halfway finished with my poster, meaning that more than half of the poster paper was filled with who and when it was invented. I panicked again and tried to fit everything in the spaces left. My final product was due in less than 3 days, so I couldn’t start over. And that was when I decided to try to fit the answer to the unit question in the remaining space.
How I crammed my answer to the unit question into less than half the poster was how I earned the grade I got and not the grade I should’ve.

Gum Investigation

Chewing Gum Investigation
We are starting a new unit project, which is the second one in the same unit, Inventions and Inventors, and this time, we are investigating inventions that we chose for ourselves, an in my case, it is gum, chewing gum and bubble gum. The unit question is How do inventors come up with ideas and create their inventions? After investigating and planning, each person in the class has to come up with their own way to present our research and invention. Because I want to improve my essay writing skills and I believe that it is a great way so I will present mine in an essay form. However some people think that it is too dull if I do it, so I’m hesitating and thinking about maybe creating a poster.
There is not specific inventor of the chewing gum because it has been around for ages. To be more specific, it has been around since the Neolithic Period, which is about 5,000 years ago. Birch barks with human teeth imprints have been found. These types of barks were believed to reduce infection and other medicinal advantages. After the Neolithic’s, the ancient Aztecs used chicle as the base for producing a gum-like product. Women used these products to freshen their mouths, as men did not believe in this “nonsense”.
Different forms of chewing gum were originated in different places such as the Ancient Greece and American Indians. The ancient Greeks used to chew mastic gum, made out from the resin from the mastic tree. The American Indians chewed on Resin from the sap of spruce trees and when the New England settlers saw this, they tries to commercially market spruce gums, and this was in the early 1800’s. A gum made from paraffin was originated around the 1850 and became more popular than the spruce gum.
Glee Gum from the United States of America was the last factory to make gums out of chicle.
In the early 1800’s, two brothers, Henry and Frank Fleer, began to do experiments with chicle, which is the sticky substance found inside a sapodilla tree. Henry Fleer covered the tasteless surface of chicle with sugar coating. Meanwhile, Brother Frank made a recipe for the world’s first bubble gum ever, and even though it was very popular in their neighborhood, their gum was never aired and marketed. So it never took off.
In 1848, another two brothers, the Curtis brothers were trying to make the same product in Maine. They used a Franklin Stove and spruce tree resin and they sold chewing gum for the first time in human history. After 2 years of moderate success the two brothers left Maine to work on their gum recipe and even opened their own factory named the Curtis Chewing Gum Factory.
Around the same time, Thomas Adams, a photographer from New York gave a shot in the gum business, and by 1871, he had so many orders coming in, he came up with an idea; a gum giving machine, which is today known as Gumball Machine. Later in the year, Thomas came up with an idea about a flavored gum. He added licorice to his gums and named them “Black Jack”.
In 1880, John Colgan, a druggist from Kentucky, added sugar to the chicle making it a sweeter treat. After Colgan, many people started coming up with new ideas to contribute to the gum idea. Walter Diemer accidentally discovered how to make a bubble gum, Beeman came up with a gum which would relieve indigestion and heartburn. Frank Canning sold a dental gum named “Dentyne”, Adams & Sons sold an after dinner candy, and Clove’s gum was made for those who drink illegally and the gum would freshen their breaths.
Because, everyone in the class could write up the design specification now, it will be so much easier for us in the end or along the process of actually making the poster. Whilst making my poster, I will know exactly what my goals are and whether if I reached them or not.

A gum made from paraffin was originated around 1850 and became more popular than the spruce gum.
The first modern chewing gum was developed in the 1860’s when the chicle was imported from Mexico as a rubber substitute. Chicle gum and the gum we chew today were made out of similar latexes, had a smoother texture, and were able to hold a flavor for a long time.
Glee Gum from America, was the last factory to make gums out of chicle.

Walter E. Diemer invented the first bubble gum. He was doing something else and he claimed that it was an accident how he came up with the invention. The most available color in the factory was pink and that is why most bubble gums are pink today.

Thomas Adams created the first chewing gum ever. He even created a licorice flavored gum. Named Black Jack/

Evaluation for Ice Cream Ice Bowl

Evaluation
Our invention the “Ice Cream Ice Bowl” is an improved invention of the already existing one. On the count of one through six, I would rate my group’s final product as a 4.5. Overall, my group and I worked together great. When it came to the part when we were to come up with the actual idea, Yea Jun was very active and kept throwing out ideas, which was eventually compromised with mine to come up with our final product. However, when it came to the position when we had to write, draw, and decorate our poster, he became very absent to ideas, and showed no interest (genders!). Despite his absences, we worked together as a group very well. He came up with ideas I never thought to come up with, and his ideas were very interesting and creative. Yea Jun first suggested that in the outer, hollow bowl, there could be a small, steel pipe circling, which is where the water would go. I accepted the idea, and when we started working on the poster and drawing diagrams, an idea popped into my head saying that the steel tube was unnecessary in a way, because that was when I came up with the idea that the whole outer bowl should be hollow, where water should be poured in. So in a way Yea Jun and I both contributed ideas to our inventions, which led us to our final product. We were both involved equally in the beginning part, but that proportion became unbalanced when we moved on the poster part, where I performed most of the time, but I feel like I shouldn’t blame him for that because it’s just not a guy thing to decorate posters with different colors.
In my opinion, the Design Cycle was always what seemed like a waste of time and effort, but this time, my partner and I, we accomplished our work according to our plan, exactly. The Design Cycle is a very accurate of breaking down big projects into parts that we can actually accomplish. It helps us not to panic when we see a huge mission waiting to be accomplished. I changed my mind about the Design Cycle after this project, because it was the first time ever for me to accomplish a project according to our plan exactly. In my opinion, this happened because I wrote plan considering my abilities, and I knew what I was going to or not going to get done if I wrote an unreasonable deadline. The fact that I completed my final product according to my plan is incredible and it is a first for me, because I always find a way to change something about my plan, or I goof off in one class and don’t do what I was supposed to get done by the end of that period, which messes up everything.
What kept me motivated and on task was my partner. Yea Jun and I have never worked together as partners before, so it was a first time for both of us. For me, it’s very important to be partners or in a group with people that you don’t normally socialize with. If I was partners with my friend, then we would probably chat throughout the project and not do anything productive. However, for some people, being in a group with someone they feel comfortable sharing their ideas with is an advantage as opposed to being a disadvantage. But for me, it never really works out well.
I would like to say that this project really convinced me to change my mind about the Technology Design Cycle. It is probably about the first time I have actually known what I was supposed to do throughout the whole project. I know that it is a start, but to reach something, I have got to start from the bottom. I am glad that I figured it out before our next big project.
