1) What was I supposed to do?
For our unit project, we were supposed to pick a factor that plays a minor/major role in the lives of the ger districters and improve it. Or, we could’ve invented a new invention, which could improve the lives of the people who live in the ger district.
2) What did I do?
I chose to improve the water trolley, which is a big tool which helps the people carry their heavy canisters without having to carry them. Since not all the people live near the water station, they mostly have to drag their water uphill, which is not an easy activity, especially in a cold, severe weather. Most of the water trolleys’ handles are made out of metal so it hurts the people’s hands. In addition, those people have to be carrying it uphill, so they must strongly grasp the metal bar and pull. That was one of the two issues I saw in the current trolleys. I solved the problem by covering the area which is usually held, by rubber. I considered the idea of covering the area with cloth, but thought that it would need constant cleaning, whilst the people already have enough errands on their plate. Another problem I spotted in the present trolleys was that it looked somewhat like a cage. There were metal bars horizontally and vertically, placed around the trolley. The problem is that small canisters would fall through the holes if placed in that water trolley, so it was deciphered by replacing the “bar-cage” by a metal box. The “box” would be fully covered so that no canisters would leave the premises.
3) What could I have done better? I could have made the opposite side of the handle a bit taller, since the people are going to be carrying it uphill and there is always a chance that the canisters will tip over and fall.
